Mr Smith is finding it very amusing to watch the Scottish press trying desperately to stake some sort of tenuous Scottish journalistic claim on the imminent inauguration of US President-Elect Senator Barack Obama. The latest example popped up in the weekend's Sunday Mail with a story linking Barack and that great Scottish pastime of golf.
"A golf fan is offering a room in Washington during Barack Obama's inauguration - in return for a stay in Troon during The Open. Interest in the president-elect's big day on January 20 is so high that rooms are being rented for thousands of dollars. But John Weaver, 42, is just as desperate to be at the golf tourney in July."
Pretty tenuous really. Mr Smith looks forward to even more of them over the next couple of weeks.
